How is Clinician Defined for the Purposes of Coding?

We created this training course for health care coders, administrators, and providers.

Although we use the term providers in this course, the ICD-10-CM Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting for SDOH, accessed at the ICD-10 webpage, refers to clinicians.

Clinician is defined as anyone who meets regulatory or facility requirements to add information to a patient’s official medical record.

This means that many different types of medical professionals - including case managers, social workers, and community health workers - can document SDOH.
