Capturing Social Determinants of Health Using Z Codes

Gravity Project: New Z Codes

The Gravity Project continues to periodically submit new codes to the ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee. For example, effective October 1, 2022, the ICD-10 Coordination and Maintenance Committee approved several Z codes proposed by the Gravity Project.

These new codes involve:

  • Education
  • Food insecurity
  • Inadequate drinking water supply
  • Housing instability and homelessness

For the full list of ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, see the CDC's ICD-10-CM Files webpage.

The user-friendly CDC ICD-10-CM browser tool also lets you search for codes and provides instructional information.
