Ongoing Efforts

Ultimately, there are many ongoing efforts related to SDOH and Z codes, both from CMS and others. For example, in addition to the severity level designation and reimbursement changes, CMS is:

  • Considering including SDOH as part of new quality measures in future rulemaking
  • Exploring ways to foster documentation and reporting of Z codes to more accurately reflect health care encounters
  • Looking for ways to improve reliability and validity of coded data to advance health equity
